We were recently given the opportunity to review MacPhail Center for Music. MacPhail offers online music lessons for students of ALL ages via Skype for 35 different instruments taught by more than 170 different teachers. MacPhail has a personalized placement process to ensure that your child is matched with the right teacher for their learning style, musical preference & level.
There are specific computer and internet requirements to ensure a successful online connection for each lesson with MacPhail. MacPhail will arrange a Skype call before scheduling lessons to test your internet speed. We had a few little hiccups in this area due to some nasty weather that damaged our modem and wifi card in our main computer.
After the personalized placement process, Michaela (17) was matched with a great teacher named Antonia. Antonia was always happy but serious about the lessons. She has a beautiful Bulgarian accent but was easy to understand. I believe Antonia was a good match for Michaela, they really seemed to just click with each other.
Michaela has been self-teaching the piano for a few months now so the idea of "real" lessons was very exciting for her. Each week Michaela would set up her keyboard in front of the computer for her 30 minute lesson with Antonia. The first lesson Antonia asked her some questions about her skill level and Michaela played part of a song that she has been teaching herself. Antonia asked Michaela what she wanted to learn first, Michaela told her "to learn to read music". That was the focus of the lessons each week so that Michaela would be able to continue to self-teach with a little more understanding.
