Many of you may know, from a my previous post, that my Hubby is currently deployed.
He left in June for additional training in Texas and just a few days ago, he left for Kuwait.
This is our first deployment. The weeks days leading up to Hubby leaving, I think I was in denial that it was actually going to happen. Last summer when he received his 12 month Active-Duty orders, we had originally decided that we wouldn't move the entire family down here to Kentucky because it was only a three hour drive home, so he could come home every other weekend. It wasn't the ideal situation but I wasn't crazy about relocating just for the year. I didn't want to leave our family and friends in Ohio and I was very attached to our church family. I really enjoyed being a leader for our church Youth Group & running the sound board for the Worship Team. Our daughter was worried about not having friends because finding high school homeschoolers is sometimes tricky, no matter where you are.
By November though, I realized that it was just too costly and tiring for Hubby to travel home so often. I put aside my own selfish anxieties and decided that we would move the family to Kentucky. I teased that we would get down here, get settled in, and he would deploy....guess I shouldn't have done that! The first few months here were a bit of a struggle for me. I am not an overtly outgoing person, can be somewhat shy in new places, so I 'hermitted" in the house for awhile. I have, since then, met some amazing, wonderful new friends and we have found an awesome new church family.
Shortly after Hubby left for Texas, I decided to start a special project.
A "Deployment" Blanket.
I was originally going to follow this Vasarely Blanket pattern with solid colors of red, white, and blue. Then I came across the Peaches & Creme 100% Cotton "Stars & Stripes" yarn and knew that was what I had to use. After I made a few diamonds, I had to play around with the placement until I came up with the one above. I know that the zigzag stripes are not going to be perfectly aligned, that's ok, it will match the ups and downs of this deployment.
This blanket will be for our bed when Hubby returns home. I measured the width of the diamonds and then measured the width of our bed (queen size), it came out to approximately 398 diamonds, which is also the approximate number of days of separation.
I would like to ask for prayers for our family, and the many other military families that are separated from loved ones at this time. Pray for safety for our brave soldiers & peace for their families.
Thanks for stopping by today. I will be posting updates on the blanket (and Hubby) around the first of each month.
God Bless!
